Head Pressure and Clearance in Dense Brookline Installations
The physics are unforgiving: an air-cooled condenser rejects heat to the air around it, and if that air is already 100° because the unit sits in a brick alley with two feet of clearance, the system trips on high head pressure and shuts down. Brookline is full of installations like this, and homeowners are told repeatedly that the unit is 'just old.' Frequently it is not. On our emergency calls we measure head pressure and discharge temperature, then look at what the equipment is actually breathing — coil fouling from street grit, a neighboring dryer vent blowing into the coil, recirculation off a wall two feet away. A proper coil cleaning, a relocated discharge, or a simple airflow deflector can restore full capacity to a unit somebody else condemned.
